Why Picking Up Pet Waste Matters

Picking up pet waste is not on anyone's favorite to do list. Many dog owners do not even bother cleaning up after their dog. Pet waste removal is more than just about poop; it is apart of being a responsible pet owner.

Disease Control

Diseases are transmitted to other dogs, cats, and people through pet waste. These diseases include Parvovirus, Corona Virus, Hookworms, Roundworms, Giardia, and more. They are passed to your pet when they walk over contaminated areas and then clean their paws. They are passed to people via unwashed hands or even absorbing eggs through the skin. Infected pet waste can cause diarrhea, severe illness, and even death to other pets! In people, roundworms can infect the eye and organs, and Hookworms can cause rashes and diarrhea. Picking up after your dog helps control the spread of disease to pets and people.

Keep Your Yard Clean Usable

Stepping in dog poop is never fun especially when playing in the yard. Picking up after your dog will keep your yard clean for activities and prevent the spread of disease. It also keeps the yard smelling fresh.

Keeping the Flies Away

Flies find pet waste very appealing. Some adult flies will eat it, and they lay eggs in it. Since fecal matter contains nutrients, it is an excellent place for eggs to hatch and turn into larvae. After adult flies land on feces in your yard, then those flies come into your home. Once inside, they land on your counters, food, and other surfaces spreading bacteria along the way. Stop the cycle by keeping your yard free of feces.

Responsible Pet Ownership

Picking up pet is apart of being a responsible pet owner. Pet waste in your yard or around your neighborhood may not bother you or your pet, but it bothersome to aquatic life in our local waterways. Pet waste can seep into our local waterways encouraging algae growth in the water which restricts oxygen to fish and other aquatic species. Not picking up dog waste may also be against the law, so do the right thing and always have a bag to clean up after your dog when on a walk! Some communities even have Dog DNA programs that will determine which pet owner is not picking up after their pet resulting in hefty fines.

At Pet-Tastic we pride ourselves in keeping our local community clean. We always pick up after pets to ensure diseases are not transmitted to other pets or people.
